SWERVEDRIVER ON PITCHFORK
Pitchfork Media gives rave reviews to the Swervedriver reissues!
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/12846-raise-mezcal-head/
It seems that in every musical movement, there are worthy artists who get lost in the shuffle. In the case of Britain's late-1980s/early-90s shoegazer scene,
Swervedriver had the unfortunate distinction of being one of those bands...
1991's Raise was a quality debut, and it's dated surprisingly well. The muscular, scorching guitars are the heart of the album, and they still bring the noise like nobody's business.
The big distortion and interlocking riffs give most of the album a dense, bright sound with a lot of punch. "Son of Mustang Ford" rumbles like the car it's named for, "Rave Down"
launches into hyperspace after three minutes of tense, grungy crunching, and "Sunset" pulls back a bit, layering cleaner guitars than usual over a bubbling bassline and unison vocals.
Two years later, on Mezcal Head, the songs caught up to the guitars. "For Seeking Heat", "Girl on a Motorbike", "You Find It Everywhere", and "Blowin' Cool" weave
laser-guided melodies through tangles of distortion-drenched guitar. The band lost its original rhythm section between albums, but new drummer Jez Hindmarsh absolutely
crushes his kit, matching the intensity of the guitar maelstrom.
For an introduction to the band, though, Mezcal Head can't be beat, and it's great to have it and Raise
available again. If you missed them the first time or simply weren't around to hear them, Swervedriver is worth the trip back in time.

ADAM FRANKLIN SPENT BULLETS: Verdict: "His Best Yet!"
It's Official, "Spent Bullets" is the finest work of Adam Franklin's solo career. Don't just listen to us, sure we are biased..
but listen to what the critics have been saying we're not making this up!
ADAM FRANKLIN TRUMPS ALL IN EXCLAIM
http://exclaim.ca/musicreviews/latestsub.aspx?csid1=131&csid2=870&fid1=37378
"... Although songs like "Autumn Leaf" and "Two Dollar Dress" still feature taffy-pulled guitar
tones with druggy melodies, Spent Bullets represents Franklin as an artist in respite. Rather than prodding or pushing, sounds are drawn in and out like a breath
as Adam worries much less about traditional structure, focusing on moods and modes instead. Spent Bullets may not bring Adam Franklin the same attention
2008 did but it trumps anything he's created in the last 12 months. (Second Motion)
ALL-MUSIC GUIDE Reviews Spent Bullets
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:fnfuxzekldde
Check the elegiac "Champs" for a nice example of their subtle glory,
or the truly melancholy-sounding lead lines on "Bolts of Melody" for their near-perfect sense of what works in these songs.
And this is one of the strongest batches of songs Franklin has written in a while. Indeed, the combination of great vocals, guitar
near-perfection, and powerful, emotionally gripping songs makes Spent Bullets one of the best albums Adam Franklin has been associated with.
FAZER Raves over Spent Bullets
http://www.fazermagazine.com/2009/01/29/adam-franklin-Ð-spent-bullets-review/
... Spent Bullets is an amazing example of Adam Franklin
circa 2009 Ð doing everything at the top of his game. As the last notes of Teardrops fade into Bolts of Melody, and your head starts to lull in a slow
Hendrix - Electric Ladyland approval at another mind-blower of a songÉ you can take solace in the fact that youÕre not even a quarter of the way into an album
that will surely go down on record as some of FranklinÕs finest material. What I really dig about Spent Bullets is the attention to detail in the production of
the album. ThereÕs plenty of little background guitar effects and signature foot-peddle action worked in throughout all of the songs.
JACK RABIG and THE BIG TAKEOVER
"... Franklin caps off a remarkable 12 months where 1) he and his incredible, long-missed Swervedriver singed excited
crowds on a hot-as-hell summer reunion tour, 2) recorded and toured a fantastic, mellifluously moody album A.M. with Magnetic Morning (his collaboration with
Interpols Sam Fogarino, helped by Jimmy LaValle of The Album Leaf), and 3) dropped this spot-on solo delight. Heaps more consistent and aurally thematic than
his odds and ends, enjoyable 2007 solo debut, Bolts of Melody, Spent more convincingly explores his 2000s ethereal side. Its remarkably upbeat and refreshing for
such an otherworldly-sounding effort
... from the breeze-tossed-quiet of Bolts of Melody to the bracing,
reverberating charms of the chiming Surge and acoustic chops Champs. Casting spells like light waterfalls, the redolent Spent holds one enthralled, enchanted, and
enraptured in quiet shimmers, tickling shivers, and pretty quivers. (secondmotionrecords.com)
JAMSBIO.COM COINS SPENT BULLETS "IMPRESSIVE"
Fans of Franklin's (especially those who adored the final two Swervedriver releases) will surely bask in this album's
other-worldly feel. it's impressive that Franklin is still churning out songs of this quality so far into his career.

Stringfellow Feeling 'Disciplined' On New Album
January 27, 2009 04:04 PM ET
Michael D. Ayers, N.Y. In between Big Star reunions, R.E.M. tours and fronting the Posies, Ken Stringfellow re-emerges this spring as part of the rock quartet the Disciplines, comprised of three-fourths of defunct Norwegian band Briskeby.
Stringfellow says "fate" led him to this project, citing the Posies success in Norway as a primary catalyst for getting the new group together. Already released in Scandanavia, the Disciplines' album, "Smoking Kills" is due April 28 in North America via Second Motion Records.
Recorded in Oslo in December 2007, the album finds Stringfellow and company exploring raw, grungy rock'n'roll. "I think this is the garage-y band we all should have been in before our polished, literate pop bands happened to be the things that brought us our first recognition," Stringfellow tells Billboard.com.Ê "We do pursue this with a teenage kind of fanaticism. And aid it with Pilates classes!"
For Stringfellow, the Disciplines provided a new way of participating in the songwriting process. "Bjorn [Bergene, guitarist] actually brings in the rough beginnings of almost all the material, even much of the lyrics," he explains.Ê "I then pick out stuff that I like, or can imagine writing to, and I edit or rewrite the words."Ê
"I love that Bjorn can go with things that are way more simple and direct than I would naturally come up with," he continues. "The simplicity and directness of it is in contrast to the dreamy, often opaque ways of my solo and Posies work."Ê
Stringfellow hopes to take the Disciplines on the road this spring to North and South America, as well as Europe. And although the occasional one-off opportunity will bring Stringfellow to the stage with the Posies and Big Star, there are no immediate recording plans for either.
"I am waiting for songs to emerge that are appropriate for the Posies, at which point we will work on another Posie opus," he says. "That's the intention."
Here is the track listing for "Smoking Kills":
"Yours For The Taking"
"Wrong Lane"
"Get It Right"
"Best Mistake"
"There's A Law"
"Falling Knives"
"Hurricane"
"I Got Tired"
"Like So Many Times Before"
"No Vacancy"
"Cause Or FX"
"Shadow Of Your Doubt"

The DiSCiPLiNES ready to invite the States!
New York, NY: THE DiSCiPLiNES are neither comic relief nor academic sobriety--they are just a band fulfilling their mission - four Norsemen of the Apocalypse come to liberate the living and the brain-dead with raw, driving guitar rock. Give them two minutes and eighteen seconds; they will give you their lives. With two chart hits in their native Norway for their riff-heavy debut, SMOKiNG KiLLS THE DiSCiPLiNES are ready to invade the States on April 28, 2009,when Second Motion/Redeye will be releasing the album.
SMOKiNG KiLLS struts its stuff from the first track, the balls-out Yours For the Taking and kills it with the heavy Ô70s glam rock homage, Get It Right replete with mind-bending guitar solo and sneering vocals. is snarly but catchy, direct but not dumb, winky but not snarky. The songs race by with brutal efficiency and raw, garage-y production. But a careful listen reveals the delicate smattering of wordplay tucked in amongst the sing-along choruses.
Three Norwegians, ex-members of Nordic pop success story Briskeby, and one American, Ken Stringfellow, whose extensive resume includes founding one of the Ô90s most critically acclaimed bands, the Posies; touring worldwide with R.E.M., and providing terawatts of energy and talent to artists such as Big Star, Lagwagon, Snow Patrol and Neil Young. KenÕs a European now, having been based in France for some years, and in his frequent tours of the Continent he teamed up with Briskeby in 2005 with a chart-topping duet hit single called Joe Dallesandro the bandÕs swan song. The core of the group--drummer Claus Larsen, bassist Baard Helgeland and guitarist Bjorn Bergene--and Stringfellow decided to carry on, and quickly developed a sound that might be seen as the antithesis of the PosiesÕ ornate, literate rock and BriskebyÕs icy, slick pop; THE DiSCiPLiNES shoot from the hip and aim for the head, heart and the naughty bits all at once, in a streamlined, succinct series of nasty jabs.
The groupÕs first effort, a raw, basement recording called Best Mistake topped the Norwegian radio charts for an entire summer in 2007 and the band subsequently set to work on an album, wisely choosing to stay in the basement to record it. The result, SMOKiNG KiLLS, was released to huge acclaim in Norway in Spring 2008. The song Oslo was played once an hour for 18 weeks on all the major radios in the country. The band went from playing a few tentative club shows to headlining festivals straight out of the gate. Encouraged by audience reactions, THE DiSCiPLiNES traveled to Spain to play a sold-out club date in Barcelona -- 6 months in advance of the albumÕs release there. This was followed by both Snow Patrol and R.E.M. taking the band out as support for massive arena shows.
Live, the band is uplifting, taking its cues from the community and spirit of a hardcore show but with an entirely different musical agenda. A lean and energized Stringfellow lap dances on the security guards; pencil thin medical student Bergene karate kicks the air while maintaining a Billy Zoom-like grin while the rhythm section of Larsen and Helgeland anchor the antics with fabulous, titanium-solid fuzz bass and drums

"ÔPainkillerÕ opens with ÒOutboundÓ a song that features a barking Syd Barrett-esque lyric, ÒWhite hippy Moses like an aphid in the roses/Universal inverse in inverted poses/Like a snort of amnesia, a ball up your noses/Not what the man in the street supposes.ÓÊ ÒOutboundÓ doesnÕt stay rooted in its madness as it also swoons and sways around the chorus while recalling David BowieÕs ÒHallo SpaceboyÓ at times.Ê ÒWolfeÓ offers a refuge from the space rock of ÒOutboundÓ with its Dylanesque snarl and upbeat time changes.
However, the record shines when it stays rooted in the space rock vibe that dominates this album.Ê ÒCelestialÓ is reminiscent of previous Church glories touched by bits of mellotron and ambient instrumentation.Ê The swirly and bass heavy ÒSong For The MaskingÓ is a greasy and droney track that leads into the lengthy space rock explosion of ÒFile Under Travel.ÓÊ Other highlights include the trippy ÒSpirit in FlameÓ and the angry vibe of ÒForever Lasts For Nothing.ÓÊ The album concludes with the 31-minute ambient epic ÒNot What You Say.Ó
ÔPainkillerÕ is the sound of a man reinvigorated, and features some of the finest space rock released this year
